Inmates at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been encouraged to take advantage of educational and skills-development programmes to prepare for life beyond incarceration.
The Officer-in-Charge of the centre, Sunday Adekumbi, and the Controller of Corrections in the FCT Command, Christopher Jen, gave the advice during the facility’s maiden inmates’ debate competition.
The competition was organised to strengthen inmates’ intellectual abilities, improve their confidence and encourage positive interaction among them.
Adekumbi and Jen urged the inmates to participate actively in the various capacity-building initiatives available at the centre, expressing optimism about their potential to contribute meaningfully to society in the future.
They noted that incarceration should not prevent individuals from pursuing their ambitions, adding that inmates could still rise to prominent positions, including becoming governors or other leaders, after their release.
Other stakeholders at the event commended the Nigerian Correctional Service for promoting skills development and intellectual engagement among inmates.
They also encouraged the participants not to give up on their dreams, stressing that discipline, positive conduct and determination could help them achieve their goals.
The debate competition marked a new initiative at the Kuje facility aimed at supporting inmates’ personal development and preparing them for reintegration into society.
