Insecurity: Democracy Watch Passes Vote of Confidence on Ribadu

The Democracy Watch Initiative, DWI, has Condemned the recent remarks by retired General Ishola Williams, where he questioned the competence of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, describing his call for a major overhaul of Nigeria’s security leadership as misguided. In a Communique issued at the end of its meeting, DWI’s Director of Strategic Communication, Tunji Bamidele, dismissed the claims, insisting Ribadu is well-qualified and experienced for the role. The group highlighted Ribadu’s track record, including his leadership of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. He noted improvements in security through intelligence-driven strategies, inter-agency collaboration, and anti-corruption efforts within security institutions. DWI also cited the rescue of thousands of hostages, reduction in kidnappings, and dismantling of terrorist camps as indicators of progress under Ribadu’s leadership, alongside strengthened coordination with agencies such as the Department of State Services. The group stressed that while challenges remain, criticism of Nigeria’s security architecture should be constructive and based on facts, urging stakeholders to support ongoing reforms rather than undermine them.
