Herdsmen kill 24 during fresh attack

Another fresh attack by suspected herdsmen on Monday, March 5, claimed at least twenty-four lives in Umusu village, leaving several others with various degrees of injuries.

The attacked was melted on the residents of the Okpokwu local government area of Benue state, during the late hours of Monday.

Among the dead are mostly women and children, with homes and property destroyed by these herdsmen.

Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom, visited the Umusu community of Idoma extraction with members of the state security council to inspect the level of destruction orchestrated by the herdsmen.

Commiserating with the people of Okpokwu community, particularly the attacked Omusu villagers, one of the victims relative and the chairman of the local government area while thanking Governor Ortom for the prompt response, described the herdsmen attack as barbaric and one that needs to nip in the bud.

Governor Samuel Ortom, lamenting the havoc committed by the herdsmen in one night, says this is truly inhuman.

Meanwhile, the governor in the company of members of the state security council visited the hospital and mortuary where over 20 persons are currently receiving treatment and the remains of dead deposited.

The incident comes after residents in some communities in Benue are beginning to enjoy a break from the persistent herdsmen attacks in the state.
