Four people have been killed and 16 others injured after a container truck overturned onto an interstate bus on Berger Bridge along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway in Lagos.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when an articulated truck carrying a 20-foot container collided with a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GME-589 ZU.
Preliminary findings indicated that the truck was travelling at excessive speed while ascending the bridge before colliding with the bus. The driver reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid the impact, causing the truck to overturn onto the bus.
LASEMA said all four deceased victims were adult males, while the 16 injured passengers were taken to Epe General Hospital for treatment.
Emergency responders, working with the Federal Road Safety Corps and the police, secured the scene and administered first aid to the injured. A crane was deployed to recover the overturned truck and container and facilitate the safe removal of the bodies. The recovery operation was ongoing as of the agency’s report.
In a separate incident at about 4.09am, a truck rammed into a solar-powered streetlight pole near Vetland School, inward Agege Pen Cinema, along Old Abeokuta Road.
The truck, with registration number KTU-940XT, mounted the road median and obstructed traffic. No casualties were recorded, although the vehicle’s front section and the streetlight pole were damaged.
LASEMA said its recovery team removed the truck and took it to Abattoir Police Station for further investigation. The road was subsequently cleared and reopened to traffic.
Another accident occurred at Lanre Bus Stop, inward Igando, along LASU-Igando Road, involving a DAF truck and a Toyota Corolla.
According to the agency, a broken-down truck had caused traffic congestion when the DAF truck, allegedly driving against traffic, collided with the Corolla and blocked part of the road.
No death was recorded in the incident, but the Corolla driver sustained a minor head injury and was taken to Igando General Hospital by an associate.
LASEMA commended the emergency responders, police and FRSC for their prompt intervention in the three incidents.
