The Edo State Government has condemned the attack on comedian Osagie Idieda, popularly known as MC Porcupine, as it denied allegations linking the incident to Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration.

The government’s reaction followed widespread criticism from entertainers, who accused suspected political thugs loyal to the governor of being behind the assault in Benin City.

In a statement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr Patrick Akhere, the government cautioned against politicising the incident before investigations established the facts.

It said the comedian’s public profile and political views were not, on their own, sufficient to determine the motive for the attack, adding that there was no evidence linking the government to the incident.

The government expressed concern over the assault and wished MC Porcupine a speedy recovery, while confirming that the Edo State Police Command had launched an investigation.

It also reiterated Okpebholo’s commitment to protecting residents and tackling violent crime, irrespective of victims’ political affiliations or social standing.

To support its position, the government cited the case of filmmaker Don Pedro Osagie, who was attacked in December 2025. Suspects in that case were arraigned before a Benin High Court in February 2026, according to the statement.

MC Porcupine was reportedly attacked by hoodlums on Friday while returning from a show in Benin City.

In a video posted online after the incident, the comedian thanked those who had expressed concern and conveyed hope despite the assault.

The attack has drawn reactions from comedians across the country, with some alleging that the assailants were government-sponsored thugs. The state government has rejected the allegations, insisting that the police investigation should establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
