Ondo State Deputy Governor Olayide Adelami has donated musical instruments to the School for the Visually Impaired in Owo to promote music education and help pupils develop their talents.
The instruments were handed over to the school management on Friday, following a visit by Adelami in May, during which he promised to support the pupils.
The donation includes a 10-channel mixer, keyboards, saxophones, trumpets, a jazz drum set, conga drums, guitars, rechargeable wireless microphones and wired microphones.
Adelami said children with visual impairments could contribute meaningfully to society if given the opportunity to develop their abilities and acquire useful skills.
He urged the school management to recruit a qualified music teacher to train the pupils and maintain the equipment.
The deputy governor said he had made a similar donation to the School for the Blind in Gindiri, Jos, in 2007, and supported the employment of a music teacher for several years.
He also commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for supporting the education sector, particularly the approval of renovation work at the Owo school.
Adelami called on individuals and organisations to support children with special needs, noting that government could not meet all their needs alone.
The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Akindele Ige, thanked the deputy governor for complementing government efforts to improve education for children with special needs.
The school principal, Ibironke Balogun, said the donation followed Adelami’s earlier promise and would improve music teaching and learning.
She assured him that the school would maintain the instruments and ensure the pupils benefited from them.
