A bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to establish the office of the Prime Minister as Head of Government and the President as Head of State has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

It is one of the 31 constitutional amendment bills that advanced to the second reading stage during Thursday’s plenary session, presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.

Among the proposed amendments is a bill seeking to allocate specific seats for women in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.

Another bill aims to shorten the duration for resolving pre-election petition cases by establishing pre-election tribunals and regulating the suspension of National Assembly members from legislative duties.

Additionally, a bill seeking to revise the eligibility criteria for candidates contesting for the offices of President, Vice President, Governor, and Deputy Governor also passed second reading.

Other amendments include a bill to review the status of the Federal Capital Territory regarding the election of the President and proposals for the creation of Wan State and Gobir State.

With these developments, the total number of constitutional amendment bills that have successfully passed second reading now stands at 113.

The house adjourned plenary session 29th of April 2025.
