The Police Command in Anambra has confirmed the arrest of a suspect over the death of his ex-girlfriend in Uga Community, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said in a statement on Saturday that the arrest followed a report by the victim’s mother to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Umuchu Division.

“The girl’s mother had reported that her daughter had been missing since Oct.16, in spite of efforts to establish her whereabouts.

“So, acting on intelligence-led information, police operatives, in collaboration with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga, arrested the suspect.

“The suspect was identified as the deceased’s alleged former boyfriend.

“During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to killing the victim following the breakdown of their relationship.

“He subsequently led detectives to the location where the remains of the deceased were discovered and recovered”, Ikenga said.

He said that in view of the circumstances surrounding the incident, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Nnanna Ama, directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka.

According to him, the directive is to enable the police to carry out a comprehensive and diligent investigation to ensure that justice is served.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspect, who lives in Uga, was nabbed by vigilante operatives, following the reported disappearance of the 23-year-old, Miss Mmesoma Mmorah, on Oct. 16.
