Three construction workers have been rescued alive and one person recovered dead after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Fadeyi area of Lagos, with emergency responders continuing to search for possible survivors beneath the rubble.

The building collapsed at Akinola Street, near Fadeyi Bus Stop, off Ikorodu Road, shortly after midnight on Friday.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said its emergency response team received a distress call at 12.10am and arrived at the scene two minutes later.

Responders discovered that the structure had caved in, with construction workers suspected to be trapped beneath the debris. Rescue efforts intensified after emergency personnel heard groaning sounds from beneath the rubble.

An excavator was deployed to support the operation, with safety measures put in place to protect the trapped victims and rescuers.

As of 3.33am, three adult men had been rescued alive, while the body of another adult male was recovered.

The survivors received immediate pre-hospital treatment from LASEMA paramedics and the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being taken to a hospital for further medical attention.

The cause of the collapse had yet to be established, according to the agency, which said the relevant regulatory authorities would investigate the incident.

The operation was coordinated by LASEMA's Director of Operations, Akintunde Akinsanya, and the Head of Cappa Base, Olayinka Salami, who were at the scene to supervise the response.

Other agencies involved included the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS and police officers from the Alagbon Division.

The Lagos State Government commiserated with the family of the deceased and wished the survivors a speedy recovery.

It also reiterated its commitment to tackling substandard construction and strengthening building monitoring and enforcement in collaboration with the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

In a separate incident on Thursday, LASEMA's Tiger Response Team responded to a truck breakdown on the Third Mainland Bridge, inward Adeniji.

The truck, which was conveying sofas, developed a mechanical fault and obstructed traffic.

The agency deployed its heavy-duty recovery equipment, Super Metro, but technical difficulties initially prevented the vehicle's removal. The truck was eventually repaired at the scene and driven away, allowing traffic to resume on the affected section of the bridge.

LASEMA urged residents to report emergencies through the toll-free numbers 767 and 112, assuring the public that its response teams remained on alert across the state.
