Residents of Opkuno-Ime village in the Awka South Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State have appealed for urgent government intervention, as deepening gully erosion threatens homes and access roads in the community.

The erosion, which followed torrential rainfall, has washed away portions of building foundations and created a large gully that residents fear could consume more houses if immediate measures are not taken.

Some residents have reportedly abandoned their homes because of fears that further erosion could trap them or cause buildings to collapse.

Access roads have also been badly affected, raising concerns that the agrarian community could eventually be cut off from neighbouring communities around Awka, the state capital.

Residents urged the Anambra State Government to intervene before the erosion causes further damage.

The development has also disrupted movement within the community, with residents calling for urgent remedial work to stabilise the affected areas and protect remaining properties.

The Anambra State Government, through the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, had planned an on-the-spot assessment of the affected area. However, residents said no intervention had taken place as of the time of filing the report.

The worsening erosion adds to the challenges posed by heavy rainfall in parts of Anambra, where gully erosion has continued to threaten homes, roads and other infrastructure.
