Apostle Sam Adegoke of Elijah Generation Church, Akure, Ondo State, has stepped back from public ministry after apologising to women with whom he had sexual relationships before his recent marriage.
Adegoke announced his decision in a statement on Monday, saying he had withdrawn from public ministry and social media to reflect on his past conduct, seek counsel and make amends.
The cleric said he took responsibility for his actions and apologised to the women involved, his wife, family, church members and others who had trusted him as a spiritual leader.
“Before I was married, I was involved in sexual relationships with women that I deeply regret,” Adegoke said.
He acknowledged that although the relationships occurred before his marriage, his conduct fell short of the standards expected of him as a Christian and minister.
The pastor said he would not use the timing of the relationships as an excuse, adding that he had been seeking God’s guidance and undergoing pastoral and professional counselling.
“I take full responsibility for my actions and sincerely apologise to the women involved for any hurt, disappointment, or harm I may have caused,” he said.
Adegoke said his decision to step away from public ministry was part of an effort to address his conduct and make necessary changes.
He also pledged to submit himself to “appropriate spiritual, pastoral, and professional accountability” throughout the process.
According to him, genuine repentance required changed behaviour, accountability and a willingness to accept the consequences of one’s actions.
The pastor appealed to the public to pray for him, saying he needed the humility and courage to confront his past, make amends where appropriate and ensure those affected were protected.
“I am deeply sorry and remain committed to walking forward with greater integrity, responsibility, and accountability,” he said.
Adegoke and his wife have also disabled comments on their respective Instagram accounts following the development.
