Matthew Rhys made television history at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards after becoming the first performer to win lead acting Emmys in two categories at the same ceremony.
Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Apple TV’s “Widow’s Bay” after earlier claiming Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix’s “The Beast in Me”.
His double victory also completed an unprecedented sweep across the three lead acting categories, following his previous win for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for “The Americans”.
“Widow’s Bay”, a horror-comedy about an island mayor facing supernatural phenomena, won 14 awards at the ceremony, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
Rhys credited the show’s creator, Katie Dippold, with his success, referring to her “depraved and twisted mind” during his acceptance speech.
He also thanked Wales, saying, “the great and good people of Wales, who were as much a nurturer as anyone else. We are a small but mighty nation. This is incredible.”
Dippold won for writing, while Hiro Murai took the directing award. Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root also won acting awards for their performances in the series.
The ceremony, hosted by “Law & Order: SVU” star Mariska Hargitay, was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday.
Medical drama “The Pitt” retained the Outstanding Drama Series award for a second consecutive year after receiving a leading 25 nominations.
Noah Wyle also repeated his victory as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
“I grew up in LA,” Wyle said. “I’m a Hollywood kid. I was raised on television, and movie theatres were my place of worship. This is all I’ve ever wanted to do, and this is the only club I’ve ever wanted to join. Thank you for accepting me.”
Jean Smart won her eighth acting Emmy after taking Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for “Hacks” for the fifth consecutive season.
Her eighth win placed her alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman for the joint record for the most acting Emmys won by a performer.
Allison Janney also claimed her eighth acting Emmy, winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for “The Diplomat”.
Rhea Seehorn won her first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for “Pluribus”, while Tom Pelphrey won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for “Task”.
Limited series “DTF St. Louis” also had a successful night, collecting seven awards, including Outstanding Limited Series and supporting acting prizes for David Harbour and Linda Cardellini.
Stephen Colbert won Outstanding Variety Talk Series for the final season of “The Late Show”, which was cancelled after a contentious run.
Using his acceptance speech to support members of his former staff, Colbert told those in the room: “Hire them. They will make your day better and your lives easier.”
“Widow’s Bay” has already been renewed for a second season, while “The Pitt” has continued its run of major awards, setting the stage for another competitive Emmy race next year.
