Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy has become the first Nigerian artiste to present an award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
The singer, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, presented the 2026 Sócrates Award to Arsenal and England forward Bukayo Saka at the ceremony held at the London Palladium on Monday, October 26.
Before announcing Saka as the winner, Burna Boy spoke about his football academy in Nigeria, explaining that he established the initiative to support football development in the country.
He expressed hope that one of the academy’s players would one day return to the Ballon d’Or ceremony as a winner.
The Sócrates Award recognises footballers who use their influence and resources to support humanitarian causes and make a positive impact in their communities.
Saka received the honour for his charitable work with BigShoe, an organisation that helps children access essential medical treatment. His support has helped fund life-changing medical procedures for children, including in Nigeria.
Burna Boy’s appearance adds to his record of performances and appearances at major international sporting events. In 2023, he performed at the UEFA Champions League final and the NBA All-Star Game.
The singer also performed alongside Shakira at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final halftime show.
Meanwhile, fellow Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold attended the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London and announced a performance at the event’s after-party.
