Electricity transmission to parts of the North-West is expected to become more reliable after the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) restored the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi transmission line, which had been out of service for more than three weeks.
The single-circuit line was returned to service at 5:24pm on Thursday, October 1, following emergency restoration work at Yauri in Kebbi State, where Tower 367 collapsed on September 7.
TCN said its engineers installed an emergency restoration system tower at the site of the collapsed structure to reconnect the transmission corridor.
According to the company, the work involved dismantling the damaged tower, preparing and aligning the conductors and skywire, erecting the replacement emergency tower and carrying out other safety-related works.
“The 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi Single Circuit Transmission Line ... has been restored to service,” TCN said in a statement issued on Friday.
The company said its engineers “worked round the clock” to complete the repairs and restore the line safely.
The Kainji–Birnin Kebbi line is an important part of the transmission network supplying Kebbi and other parts of the North-West.
Its prolonged outage affected electricity transmission along the corridor, with the restoration expected to improve the reliability of supply in the affected areas.
TCN, however, noted that electricity available to consumers would still depend on factors including power generation, the condition of distribution networks and other parts of the electricity value chain.
The transmission company thanked consumers in the affected areas for their patience during the outage and reiterated its commitment to “maintaining a stable and reliable transmission network”.
