The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centre in Ottawa, Canada, from 2027, allowing Nigerians in North America to take the examination without travelling to Nigeria.

JAMB said the proposed centre would expand access to the UTME for eligible Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The examination body disclosed this following a visit by its Registrar, Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa, where the proposed centre was discussed.

According to JAMB, the initiative would reduce the logistical burden on Nigerians in the diaspora who currently have to travel to Nigeria solely to sit for the examination.

“The proposed centre will make it easier for eligible Nigerians in Canada and across North America to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria solely for the examination,” the board said.

JAMB added that the initiative would provide “more access” while strengthening the connection between Nigerians abroad and the Nigerian education system.

The UTME is a requirement for candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions, with more than two million candidates sitting the examination in 2026.

JAMB already conducts the examination at designated centres in several countries, including the United Kingdom, Ghana, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Côte d’Ivoire.

The proposed Ottawa centre is expected to commence operations in 2027.
