The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if the Federal Government fails to pay outstanding arrears covered by its 2026 agreement with the union within 14 days.
SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, issued the ultimatum on Monday in Abuja while presenting resolutions reached at the association’s National Executive Council meeting held at the Federal University, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, at the weekend.
Ibrahim said the government had failed to fully implement the payment arrangements contained in the 2026 agreement, describing the implementation of the arrears as haphazard.
He said the union had given the Federal Government 14 days to complete the payments, warning that failure to do so would trigger industrial action.
“The agreement was clear on the modalities to resolve the lingering issues, but the implementation has been haphazard,” Ibrahim said.
The union also rejected the Federal Government’s plan to concession King’s College, Lagos, describing the move as unacceptable.
SSANU said it would continue to engage the government on the outstanding issues but maintained that its members could not continue to wait indefinitely for the implementation of agreements already reached.
The latest ultimatum raises the prospect of another disruption in the nation’s university system if the government fails to resolve the arrears within the period set by the union.
