The Ekiti State Government says it has recruited 5,530 teachers into public primary and secondary schools in four years while upgrading schools with ICT laboratories, internet facilities and security cameras.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji disclosed this on Monday in Ado Ekiti during an event marking the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, where he also distributed N70.5 million to outstanding teachers across the state’s 16 local government areas.
The government said the recruitment comprised 430 teachers employed through the Teaching Service Commission in 2022, 500 in 2023/2024 and 1,600 in 2025/2026.
The State Universal Basic Education Board also recruited 1,500 teachers in the 2022/2023 session and another 1,500 in 2026.
Oyebanji said the government had also equipped all 203 public secondary schools with ICT laboratories, interactive boards and 5KVA inverters, while 125 schools had been connected to internet facilities.
He said old school buildings had been renovated across the state, while perimeter fencing had been provided for 54 public secondary schools.
The governor added that 48 secondary schools had been equipped with CCTV cameras, with another 85 scheduled to receive the security equipment in October.
“We are committed to regular payment of salary, disbursement of revolving car and housing loans for eligible secondary school teachers,” Oyebanji said.
He said the government would continue to prioritise the welfare of teachers in public schools, while thanking them for their contribution to improved teaching and learning outcomes.
“As a government, we appreciate the central place of teachers in the education value chain, and we shall always be committed to making this celebration worthwhile and memorable,” he said.
The N70.5 million distributed at the event went to teachers recognised for outstanding performance and commitment. The beneficiaries were drawn from public and private primary and secondary schools, as well as other administrative cadres in the education sector.
Oyebanji also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Association of Public School Head Teachers of Nigeria and the Coalition of Private School Owners for their partnership with the government.
The NUT state chairman, Lawrence Adedeji, and the ASUSS representative, Austin Bamidele, commended the governor’s efforts in the education sector.
They, however, urged the government to fulfil its promises on outstanding emoluments and other welfare packages, stressing that teachers’ welfare should extend beyond the annual October celebration.
Oyebanji also appealed to teachers to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the January 2027 presidential election, saying his return would ensure continuity of the administration’s Shared Prosperity Agenda in Ekiti State.
