Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, President of the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), has congratulated Nigerian professional golfer Godwin Okoko on winning his maiden professional title in Kenya.

Okoko, 24, clinched the Rift Valley Championship at Nakuru Golf Club on Tuesday, emerging champion of the eighth leg of the Sunshine Development Tour-East Africa Swing.

The young Nigerian delivered an impressive performance in the final round, shooting five-under-par 68 to finish with a tournament total of 209.

Simon Njogu of Golf Park Golf Club finished second with a nine-under-par 210, while overnight leader Edwin Mudanyi placed third with a six-under-par 213.

Runsewe described Okoko’s achievement as a significant milestone for golf in Nigeria, saying it demonstrated the country’s growing potential to produce internationally competitive professional golfers.

He said, “Okoko’s victory in Kenya is a proud moment for Nigerian golf and a testament to the talent, determination and hard work of our young professionals”.

The NGF president said the triumph should inspire other Nigerian golfers to pursue excellence and compete confidently at international tournaments.

Runsewe also commended Okoko’s trainer, Pro Dominic, for his dedication, commitment and efforts in developing the golfer’s skills and preparing him for competitive success.

“Behind every successful athlete is a support system that provides guidance, discipline and encouragement.

“I commend Pro Dominic for investing his time and expertise in Okoko’s development,” he said.

The NGF president further promised that the federation would give Okoko a befitting reward upon his return to Nigeria in recognition of his achievement.

He said the gesture would encourage the golfer to build on his success and motivate other Nigerian professionals to strive for similar accomplishments on the international stage.

Runsewe reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to supporting talented golfers and creating opportunities for them to develop their careers and represent Nigeria successfully in international competitions.
