The 37-year-old former AC Milan and Chelsea forward is one of the investors in Sports Alpha Capital and will serve as a director of the League Two club.

Sports Alpha Capital acquired a 70 per cent stake in Northampton Town Ventures Limited, the company that owns the majority shareholding in the club. Existing owners David Bower, Nigel Le Quesne and Kelvin Thomas retain a combined 30 per cent.

The takeover was approved by the Independent Football Regulator and the English Football League earlier this month.

Northampton confirmed that the deal leaves the club debt-free after it reported a pre-tax loss of almost £3m in April.

Pato, who retired from professional football last year, is best known for his five-and-a-half-year spell at AC Milan, where he scored 63 goals in 150 appearances and won the 2010/11 Serie A title.

He was capped 27 times by Brazil.

Pato was among the Sports Alpha Capital investors who attended Northampton’s 1-0 League Two victory over Newport County on September 5.

The takeover has also brought changes to the club’s leadership structure.

Kelvin Thomas, who has served as chairman for more than a decade, is stepping down from the position but will remain a shareholder and director.

Sports Alpha Capital’s Joao Xavier and Tim Chamberlain will become co-chairmen, while chief executive James Whiting and supporters’ representative Tom Cliffe will retain their board positions.

Jim Rosenthal and Mike Wailing will leave their board positions and become associate directors.

In a joint statement, Xavier and Chamberlain said the new owners had “ambitious plans” for Northampton, while stressing the importance of sustainability and the club’s relationship with the local community.

They said Sports Alpha Capital would work with supporters, staff, partners, the Community Trust and other local stakeholders to develop the club.

Northampton were relegated to League Two last season after finishing bottom of League One.

Chris Hogg was appointed manager in May, while the club signed 13 players during the summer transfer window, including Matty Warhurst from Manchester City.
