CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel has died aged 30, a day after a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a league match at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium.
The incident happened late in the game, when De Miguel challenged for a loose ball as Owono came out of his goal to clear it. The goalkeeper, who was outside the penalty area, collided with the striker, leaving him unconscious on the pitch.
Medical staff treated De Miguel for several minutes before carrying him on a stretcher to the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The match, tied 2-2, was abandoned in the 108th minute so he could receive medical attention. Owono was sent off after the collision.
Spanish media reported that De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest and was resuscitated in the ambulance. His condition initially appeared stable but worsened in the early hours of Tuesday. CD Tenerife said he died at 8am on Tuesday, November 3.
In a statement, the club said: “Broken with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda.”
The club added: “There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can ease this feeling of overwhelming sadness. We stand with his devastated family, his loved ones and the entire Tenerife family, who mourn this cruel outcome.”
CD Tenerife also offered condolences to De Miguel’s family, friends, teammates and supporters. His family thanked those who had sent messages of support and asked for privacy during this difficult time.
Tributes have come from clubs and supporters across Spain, including Barcelona and Real Madrid.
