Brighton & Hove Albion could face Manchester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after Wednesday’s draw paired them with the winner of City’s outstanding tie against Norwich City.
Brighton secured their place in the last 16 earlier on Wednesday after recovering from two goals down to beat Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford.
The fourth-round draw was conducted shortly after the final whistle at Old Trafford, with the matches scheduled for the week commencing October 26.
City, the defending champions, will first have to overcome Norwich before they can face Brighton, who ended United’s campaign with a comeback victory.
United surrendered a two-goal lead within 10 minutes as Brighton turned the tie around, extending their impressive record at Old Trafford.
The defeat also left United manager Michael Carrick taking responsibility for the result.
“I take responsibility for it. The performance towards the end of the second half, that's on me,” Carrick said.
“I totally understand the feelings of the supporters. I totally understand it. We have to accept it. I totally accept it. It's on me, ultimately,” he added.
Asked whether the defeat had placed his position under pressure, Carrick said: “Under pressure? That doesn't bother me one bit.”
Brighton’s victory was their fifth win in their last six visits to Old Trafford and came against a United side that won the Carabao Cup last season.
For City, the potential Brighton meeting offers another difficult tie as they seek to defend the trophy. The club previously won four successive League Cup titles between 2018 and 2021.
Elsewhere, last season’s beaten finalists Arsenal were drawn away to League Two side Fleetwood Town, the lowest-ranked club remaining in the competition.
The other fourth-round ties will see Fulham host Crystal Palace, Liverpool face Chelsea, Everton take on Newcastle United, Sunderland meet Brentford, and Bournemouth welcome Aston Villa.
The matches will be played in the week commencing October 26.
