President Bola Tinubu has received a seven-volume proposal for the United Nations’ 2027 budget, presented by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the organisation, Jimoh Ibrahim.
Ibrahim, who chairs the UN committee responsible for administrative and budgetary matters, presented the document to the President at the State House in Abuja.
Speaking to journalists after the presentation, the envoy described the event as historic, claiming it was the first time in 66 years that a Nigerian President had received the proposed UN budget through the process.
He said the document, submitted by the UN Secretary-General to the General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, was brought to Nigeria because the country is a member of the international organisation.
Ibrahim said the proposal covered the UN’s regular activities and peacekeeping operations, with approximately $3.4bn allocated to the regular budget and $8.5bn earmarked for peacekeeping.
Although he put the overall figure at about $14bn, the two components he cited amount to $11.9bn.
The envoy stressed that the figures remained provisional and would undergo further scrutiny and possible adjustments before member states approved the final budget.
He said the process involved discussions among member states, revisions to the proposed allocations and final approval before spending could begin.
Asked what Nigeria stood to gain from the budget, Ibrahim said discussions were ongoing and declined to specify any direct benefits for the country.
He, however, cited the construction of a $267m UN conference centre in Kenya as an example of the organisation’s investment in facilities within member states.
The proposed 2027 budget will now proceed through the UN’s review and approval process before the final allocations are adopted.
