The Northern Elders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum have urged party leaders to address lingering grievances within the party following the reported return of eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly to the APC.
The forum said the lawmakers’ return presented an opportunity to rebuild trust and strengthen the party’s structure in Zamfara State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Its chairman, Yusuf Abubakar, made the position known in a statement on Tuesday, commending President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, for their reported roles in the reconciliation efforts.
Abubakar said Tinubu’s intervention demonstrated a commitment to dialogue and unity within the ruling party despite the demands of governance.
He also praised Matawalle, a former Zamfara governor, for engaging aggrieved party members and working to resolve disagreements that contributed to the lawmakers’ departure.
According to the forum, the development highlights the importance of sustained consultations among party leaders, elected officials and other stakeholders to prevent internal disputes from weakening the APC.
It urged party members, particularly in the North-West, to embrace reconciliation and ensure that all stakeholders felt included in the party’s decision-making process.
The forum said unity should extend beyond the return of elected officials to rebuilding confidence and addressing the concerns of members who feel marginalised.
It added that sustained reconciliation would be important to the APC’s mobilisation efforts ahead of the next electoral cycle and President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The Zamfara APC has faced internal disagreements as political stakeholders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. Matawalle governed the state from 2019 to 2023 before joining the APC.
The forum said the long-term impact of the lawmakers’ return would depend on whether party leaders could resolve outstanding disputes and prevent further defections.
