The Jigawa State House of Assembly has approved a constitutional amendment bill seeking the establishment of state police, insisting that the proposed security system is not intended to target opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, gave the assurance on Wednesday while explaining the lawmakers’ decision to approve the bill transmitted by the National Assembly.
Dangyatin said the proposal was driven by the need to address Nigeria’s worsening security challenges rather than serve political interests.
“People are complaining about the current security situation in the country. Therefore, the creation of state police will help improve security across the country,” he said.
He maintained that the proposed arrangement was not designed to witch-hunt opposition parties, stressing that security remained a collective responsibility requiring cooperation among governments and citizens.
“Security is everyone’s responsibility. Therefore, federal and state governments, as well as individuals, must work together to improve the security situation in the country,” he added.
The Speaker said the proposed state police system would also create employment opportunities, particularly for young Nigerians.
He explained that the constitutional amendment bill provided for the establishment of state police commissions to coordinate recruitment and other activities of the proposed security outfits.
Dangyatin said the state lawmakers who supported the bill recognised the need to strengthen security at the grassroots level.
He also assured that the Jigawa State Government would provide adequate funding for the proposed police service to ensure effective operations in line with the provisions of the constitutional amendment.
