There was tension at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday after activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore confronted a lawyer who allegedly described him as a “tout”.
A video circulating on social media showed Sowore challenging the lawyer, identified as Yakubu, and demanding that he withdraw the remark.
Sowore questioned why the lawyer had addressed him in such a manner, insisting that he had done nothing to warrant the alleged insult.
“Why did you call me a tout? What have I done to you? You have to withdraw that insult. How can you say I am a tout? For what? For exercising my rights?” he said.
The activist accused the lawyer of behaving inappropriately in a courtroom, adding that he should have known better.
Some of Sowore’s supporters were also seen in the video condemning the lawyer over the alleged remark.
The incident occurred ahead of proceedings in Sowore’s ongoing trial over his description of President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” on his social media account.
The case is being heard by the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the defence and prosecution have disagreed over whether the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Oluwatosin Ajayi, should personally testify.
The defence has argued that Ajayi must appear because he was specifically named in a subpoena, while the prosecution maintains that an authorised DSS officer can testify on behalf of the agency.
The matter was previously scheduled for a ruling on October 6, but proceedings were stalled following the trial judge’s absence due to a bereavement. The case was subsequently adjourned until Monday, October 19.
