The Senate has confirmed former Minister of Sports, Sani Mohammed Ndanusa, as a non-career ambassador-designate, paving the way for his appointment to represent Nigeria in a foreign mission.

The confirmation followed the consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, presented by its chairman, Senator Sani Bello, representing Niger North, during plenary on Tuesday.

Bello said the committee screened Ndanusa and found him qualified for the diplomatic position, citing his educational background, professional experience and record in public service.

The committee subsequently recommended him for confirmation, which the Senate approved after consideration at the Committee of the Whole.
Senate Chief Whip, Senator Tahir Monguno, also backed the nomination, describing Ndanusa as qualified for the role based on his education and contributions to public service.

Congratulating the nominee, Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged him to justify the confidence placed in him by the government and avoid disappointing the country.

Akpabio expressed hope that Ndanusa would use his experience to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with other countries.
Ndanusa is a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management. He holds a master’s degree in Water and Waste Engineering from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.

He previously served as a senior engineer on infrastructure projects and held commissioner portfolios for works, infrastructure and transportation in Niger State.

Ndanusa was appointed Minister of Sports in December 2008 and served until March 2010.
