The House of Representatives has asked the Federal Government to retain the original route of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway through Ondo State and the Escravos–Ogheye–Ugborodo corridor, warning that the proposed realignment could cut off coastal communities and key oil and gas facilities.

The resolution followed a motion moved by a member of the House, Thomas Ereyitomi, who raised concerns about the economic implications of changing the route.

The lawmakers said the proposed realignment could undermine the highway’s objectives by bypassing communities hosting strategic energy infrastructure, including Chevron’s tank farm and the Escravos Gas-to-Liquids Plant.

They expressed concern that the changes could affect commercial activities, energy supply and government revenue, stressing the need to preserve the highway’s access to critical facilities and coastal settlements.

The House mandated its Committee on Works to examine the matter and report back within four weeks.

Meanwhile, two bills sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, and other lawmakers have passed second reading in the House.

The first bill, co-sponsored by 12 other lawmakers, seeks to promote and industrialise Nigeria’s drone industry. It passed second reading after being presented by Ahmad Satomi.

Another bill, sponsored by Kalu and six other lawmakers, seeks to establish a national deceased organ and tissue donation programme and prohibit organ trafficking.

The bill also passed second reading after it was presented by Patrick Umoh.
