PLASU STUDENTS URGE GOVERNMENT TO FACILITATE COURSE ACCREDITATION

The suspension of the VC of the Plateau state University has thrown the academic institution into crises that has led to a protest of over 500 students. The state government in a statement last Thursday announced the suspension of Prof. Danjuma Sheni, for a reason it termed “inappropriate behavior”, a move many considered to be due to tribal and personal sentiments.

A statement from the office of the Secretary to the State Government on Thursday, did not however elaborate on what was termed an “inappropriate behavior.
Our correspondent gathered that the action might be connected to the reappointment of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Dadi Davou.

The latest crises in the state’s university led the pioneering students of the university to the states NUJ Secretariat to delivered a press briefing stating their position.

The government of Governor Jang has had a running battle with the tertiary institution as it had once closed it down. The new development, some lecturers alleged, was the second time Jang was interfering in the administration of the institution. \

On September 7, 2007, few months after his election, the governor had ordered the suspension of academic activities in the school, sacking the then pioneer Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Wade, and sending over 500 students to the streets.

However Wade was reinstated and the school reopened after a three-year long legal tussle.

The students while stating their major grievance and asking for redress called on the government of the state to ensure that primal things such as course accreditation are put in proper perspective. They however promise to remain law abiding and expect the authorities to attend to their immediate demands.
