Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has said presidential candidate Peter Obi treated sportsmen shabbily when he was the Governor of Anambra State.
This came after Obi commented on the poor development of sports in Nigeria after watching a football match between Enugu Rangers FC and Ikorodu City FC at Onikan Stadium in Lagos.
Sharing on X, Obi said, "As the match unfolded, I thought about the enormous possibilities of sport and how countries such as Brazil and Jamaica have used it to engage young people, fight crime, and create opportunities."
Reacting, Onanuga referenced newspaper headlines from 2012 when Obi was the Governor of Anambra State.
The stories in the papers spoke about how athletes from Anambra staged a protest against Obi's administration over poor camping allowance. Another article told how Anambra athletes became beggars on the streets of Lagos, which hosted the National Sports Festival in 2012.
According to Onanuga, "Headlines don't lie like Peter Obi lies, recklessly. His poor sports record as governor is well documented in the archives. Today, he talks, very glibly, of course, about the need for the FG to invest in sport, when, as governor for 8 years, he treated Anambra sportsmen and women and even, unconscionably, the physically challenged sportsmen and women, shabbily."
