The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed its candidate for the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council constituency in the Borno State House of Assembly over alleged involvement in campaign activities associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The party announced the dismissal of Mohammed Bunu in a letter dated October 25, 2026, signed by its Borno State Deputy Chairman, Umar Fema.

The letter said the disciplinary action followed concerns over campaign materials bearing the ADC logo, the slogan “Sabon Tafiya, Sabon Salo”, and the names and photographs of Atiku and Bunu.

According to the party, Bunu’s appearance on the materials raised questions about his political allegiance, loyalty and commitment to the NDC.

The matter was initiated at the Hausari Ward level before being referred to the party leadership in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council for investigation and further consideration.

The letter stated that the ward executive invited Bunu to appear before it at about 10am on October 23 to respond to allegations that he was involved in campaigning for another political party, but he failed to attend.

Following his absence, the ward secretary, Rabiu Umar, reportedly recommended disciplinary action and referred the matter to the MMC Working Committee.

The party said Bunu was again invited to appear before an investigation committee on October 24 but did not attend the proceedings.

After reviewing the committee’s report, the MMC party chairman, Adamu Ibrahim, endorsed the recommendation for his dismissal and forwarded the matter to the state leadership for further action.

Fema said the state chapter considered the allegations and reports submitted through its disciplinary structure before communicating its decision to dismiss Bunu from the party, subject to applicable constitutional requirements and the authority of the relevant party organs.

The party directed Bunu to comply with its established procedures and refrain from presenting himself as authorised to act on its behalf in any capacity affected by a valid and effective party decision.

However, the letter distinguished between termination of Bunu’s status as an NDC candidate and expulsion from party membership, noting that the two matters were separate.

The development comes as political parties and their candidates prepare for the 2027 general elections.
