Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has urged Commissioners of Information in the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led states to effectively project President Bola Tinubu administration’s policies and achievements.

Idris, who gave the advice during a meeting with the commissioners in Abuja on Thursday, also urged them to strengthen collaboration and coordinate government communication networks.

He said the administration’s reforms were aimed at strengthening the economy, expanding opportunities, improving infrastructure and advancing national development.

“Effective communication is no longer optional. It is an essential instrument of leadership, governance and public engagement,” he said.

The minister urged the commissioners to strengthen communication networks between federal and state institutions, share verified information and deploy traditional and digital platforms to reach citizens.

He also warned against misinformation and disinformation, emphasising that credibility, transparency and responsible engagement were essential to sustaining public confidence.

“Our greatest asset is public trust and that trust can only be sustained through accuracy, transparency, consistency and responsible engagement,” the minister said.

He further stressed the importance of listening to citizens, understanding public sentiment and incorporating feedback into government communication strategies, describing the meeting as an opportunity to build a sustained partnership among information managers.

“Effective communication is a two-way process. We must pay attention to citizens’ concerns, understand public sentiment and ensure that feedback informs how the government engages with the people,” Idris said.

The meeting was attended by 20 Commissioners of Information from APC-led states, who joined the minister for discussions on strengthening intergovernmental communication, information coordination and public engagement.
