African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has condemned the reported attack on supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State, warning that failure to hold the perpetrators accountable could lead to anarchy.
Okonkwo made the statement following reports of violence against NDC supporters who gathered to welcome the party’s 2027 governorship candidate, Chinyeaka Ohaa, in Enugu.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, October 10, 2026, when supporters gathered at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Emene. Reports also indicated that sporadic shootings occurred at the NDC secretariat during the party’s governorship campaign flag-off.
Reacting to the development, Okonkwo called on the relevant authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
He warned that allowing political violence to go unpunished could worsen tensions and undermine democratic participation in the state.
The ADC chieftain’s remarks come amid disagreements over the circumstances surrounding the incident and allegations concerning the involvement of political actors.
Enugu government calls for investigation
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has called for a thorough and impartial police investigation into the reported attacks.
In a video message shared on his Facebook page on Monday night, the governor said anyone found responsible for criminal acts should be prosecuted, regardless of their political connections.
“We must allow the evidence to establish what happened,” Mbah said, stressing that citizens should be able to participate in lawful political activities without fear of intimidation or violence.
The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, had disputed allegations that the state government was responsible for the incident. He also claimed that the NDC attempted to gather at the airport without the necessary approval.
However, the NDC rejected the government's account, maintaining that the claims surrounding its activities at the airport were false.
The police have ordered an investigation into the reported violence.
The incident has raised concerns about political safety in Enugu ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with calls for accountability and protection for supporters of all political parties.
