The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has praised the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for his handling of security during the state’s political crisis, as the police chief pledged stronger collaboration with the government to maintain peace.

Fubara spoke on Tuesday when Disu, accompanied by senior police officers and heads of other security agencies, visited him at Government House, Port Harcourt.

The governor recalled that Disu served as Rivers Commissioner of Police in 2024, at the height of the political tension between the state government and other political interests.

“While he was here as a Commissioner, he was here at the peak of crisis. But I can tell you that he did his work, not minding the situation,” Fubara said.

He added that the police chief had tried to balance competing interests despite the difficult circumstances.

Fubara said he was pleased to receive Disu in his new position, describing his performance during his previous assignment in the state as commendable.

The governor also wished him success in tackling Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Earlier, Disu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to working with the Rivers government and other stakeholders to protect lives and property, maintain public order and promote peaceful coexistence.

He said effective policing depended on cooperation between security agencies and government authorities.

“Without the cooperation of the state government, without the cooperation of the Governor, the job of policing will be very, very difficult,” the IGP said.

Disu thanked Fubara and the people of Rivers for their support during his earlier posting, noting that collaboration had helped security agencies maintain peace in the state.

The police chief said his visit also provided an opportunity to attend the launch of a book by retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga, one of the first 20 women to join the Nigeria Police Force.

The memoir, titled Origin of Policewomen in Nigeria and My Journey in the Nigeria Police Force (1955–1986), documents her career and the early history of women in the force.

The Nigeria Police Force said the visit was aimed at strengthening the existing partnership between the police and the Rivers State Government.
