The Ondo State Government has ordered the fumigation of a river in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area, following complaints of a strong stench after a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed into the water last week.
The state government also directed the distribution of nose masks and other essential health kits to residents to reduce their exposure to potential health hazards.
The directives were issued by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who instructed the state Ministries of Environment and Health to begin extensive fumigation of the river to prevent a possible disease outbreak.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, on Wednesday, the government said the intervention was necessary because the river serves as a major source of livelihood for residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities.
Aiyedatiwa also directed the Ilaje Local Government to arrange water tankers to provide residents with potable water if assessments establish that the river is severely polluted and unsafe for use.
The water supply arrangement, according to the statement, will remain in place pending a lasting solution to the pollution.
The government said the measures were intended to protect public health while addressing residents' concerns over the condition of the river following the crash.
Aiyedatiwa also reaffirmed the state government's commitment to supporting the Nigerian Air Force's ongoing evacuation efforts and ensuring the safety and welfare of residents in the affected community.
