Senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura has secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for Zamfara North after defeating his challenger, Tijjani Yahaya Kaura, by 39,548 votes in a rerun primary ordered by the courts.
Kaura polled 49,176 votes against Tijjani’s 9,628 in the fresh exercise conducted on Monday, November 2.
The rerun followed a Court of Appeal judgment in Sokoto upholding an earlier Federal High Court decision which nullified the party’s previous primary over alleged irregularities.
The legal challenge was instituted by another APC aspirant, Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, who contested the conduct of the initial exercise.
The Chairman of the APC Zamfara North Senatorial District Primary Election Committee, Dr Auwal Abdullahi Aliyu, announced Kaura as the winner.
Reacting to the outcome, the Northern Elders Progressive Group praised APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, for allowing the rerun to proceed without interference.
The group’s North-West Executive Secretary, Abbas Sarki, said the party chairman’s neutrality helped ensure a credible exercise.
“Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda has demonstrated that true leadership is about creating an enabling environment for a transparent and credible process,” Sarki said in Kaduna on Tuesday.
He added that the decision to allow the electoral committee to discharge its responsibilities independently had strengthened confidence in the party’s internal democratic process.
The group said reports from its monitoring team indicated that the exercise was conducted fairly despite alleged attempts by some individuals to undermine it.
It also congratulated Kaura and urged other aspirants to support his candidacy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sarki said unity among party members would be crucial to securing victory for the APC in the forthcoming polls.
The group also commended President Bola Tinubu for his support for the party in the North-West, particularly in security, economic growth and infrastructure development.
