The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has disclosed that it has about N6.13bn left from reported financial inflows of N8.53bn, while appealing to members and supporters for additional funds ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party’s National Treasurer, Dr Peter Onigah, disclosed this at its third National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja on Monday, saying the party had spent approximately N2.40bn on its activities.

Onigah said the party had been prudent in managing its finances and had avoided exhausting its available resources as it builds its structures ahead of the elections.

“We have been very prudent. Our chief is made up of technocrats, people who are experienced and people who have different capacities,” he said.

He assured members that the party would provide a detailed breakdown of its financial transactions as it approaches the end of its first accounting year.

The treasurer also urged members and supporters to contribute more towards the party’s operations, saying it had yet to secure control of any government.

“As a new party, we don’t have people in government yet. All of us are outside the government. So we need to contribute together and ensure that our party will prevail and achieve the desired objectives,” he said.

Senator Victor Umeh, who spoke at the meeting, commended the leadership for presenting its financial statement and retaining more than N6bn from the reported inflows.

Umeh described the balance as seed money for the party’s future activities but warned that it would not be sufficient to meet all its organisational and electoral commitments.

He said the funds had been raised through contributions from party members and called for further support, including contributions from state chapters and other stakeholders during election and nomination periods.

The party’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas Zuwoghe, earlier delivered the opening remarks at the meeting, where members reviewed the party’s finances and discussed organisational priorities.

The disclosure comes as political parties begin preparations for the 2027 elections, with funding expected to play a major role in campaign operations, nationwide mobilisation and the expansion of party structures.

The NDC said it remained committed to financial accountability, with a more detailed breakdown of its reported inflows and expenditure expected to provide further information on how the funds were raised and spent.
