The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against a fake online publication claiming to be a special announcement on governorship candidates in six states ahead of the 2027 elections.
The commission identified the affected states as Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano, urging the public to disregard the publication and avoid sharing it.
In a public notice issued on Monday, INEC said the purported announcement did not originate from the electoral body.
“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the statement read.
The commission also dismissed claims that it had issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states, describing such information as false.
It urged Nigerians to verify electoral updates through its official website, press releases and verified social media accounts to avoid being misled by fraudulent publications.
INEC listed its website as inecnigeria.org and its social media handles as @inecnigeria on X and Instagram, while its Facebook page is INEC Nigeria. It also directed the public to its news portal, inecnews.com , for updates.
The warning comes two days after the commission published its final lists of candidates for the February 6, 2027 governorship elections.
The published lists reportedly omitted the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship candidates in Ogun and Gombe states, Ladi Adebutu and Isa Pantami, respectively. The documents did not state the reasons for their omission.
INEC advised the public to remain vigilant and obtain election-related information only through its recognised communication channels.
