The chairman, senate committee on the army, senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno south has said President Muhammadu Buhari will assent to the Nigerian peace corps bill if passed by the National Assembly.

Senator Ndume gave the hint today while addressing journalists at the peace corps of Nigeria founder’s day 22nd-anniversary celebration.

The National Assembly had, in 2017, passed the Nigerian Peace Corps establishment bill, but the president withheld his assent, citing paucity of funds and duplication of duties of the already existing agencies, as reasons.

Earlier on his part, national commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria, Dickson Akoh said there is no security agency in Nigeria that is currently undertaking the functions ascribed to Peace Corps in the said bill.

The theme for this year's anniversary Centres around social organizationS, human rights and COVID-19 pandemic.
