Ibarapa Youths Protest, Demand Release of Detained OPC Members

Youths from Ibarapa axis of Oyo State on Monday disrupted activities at the Agodi Governor's office demanding the unconditional release of three members of the Oodua Peoples' Congress who arrested the suspected Fulani warlord, Iskilu Wakili.

The protestors with banners and placards of various inscriptions despite the heavy security presence at the entrance of the secretariat manoeuvred their way in to register their displeasure.

Correspondent Kunle Ojo reports that the youths blocked the entrance to the Governor's office chanting various solidarity songs demanding the release of OPC members currently being detained at the correctional centre Abolongo, in Oyo town.

The leader of the Group Oladokun Oladiran said the Ibarapa axis of Oyo state is suffering from the onslaught of Fulani herdsmen adding that despite the plea of residents, the state government and the security agencies have done little or nothing towards protecting the lives and property of people living in the axis.

While saluting the doggedness of Oodua People Congress which led to the arrest of Iskilu Wakili, the suspected Fulani warlord, the group decried the trial of the three OPC members whom they described as their hero.

On His part, the Chief of Staff to Governor Seyi Makinde, Olabisi Ilaka urged the youths to remain calm saying the state government, in conjunction with security agencies are doing their best towards restoring peace to the axis.

The Youths demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the three OPC members saying nothing untoward should happen to them.

They accused the federal government of trying to use the three detainees as scapegoat adding that, the state government under Governor Seyi Makinde should intervene and ensure their release.

The chief of staff to Governor Seyi Makinde promised that the state government will ensure that justice is done to the OPC members being detained.

The youths promised to mobilize more support for the OPC members if the state government failed to do the needful.
