Six hundred and forty (640) Nigerians stranded in South Africa have indicated interest to be airlifted back to the country following the series of xenophobic attacks.

This latest information on the state of affairs of Nigerians in South Africa was brought to the fore this Monday shortly after a closed-door meeting at the National Assembly complex of the Chairman, Nigeria in the Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri with the Senate Committee on Diaspora Matters.

Mrs. Dabiri told journalists that the issue of lack of relevant travel papers for those to be airlifted has been sorted out by the Nigerian government to ensure prompt commencement of the airlift.

On his part, Senator Ajibola Bashiru, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Diaspora Matters said the South African government now seems to be taking action as four of the country’s policemen are currently being investigated over the murder in a South African hotel of Mrs. Elizabeth Chukwu, Deputy Director-General, Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria.
