First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has urged Nigerians to eliminate food waste, highlighting the growing threats of climate change, conflicts, and supply chain issues to global food security.
She made the appeal on Sunday during Nigeria’s observance of World Cleanup Day 2026, themed "From Clean Plates to Clean Cities."
The First Lady emphasised that addressing food waste is especially urgent amid the widespread challenges affecting food production and availability worldwide.
“This year’s focus on food waste is particularly important at a time when climate change, conflicts, and other global challenges continue to disrupt food production and supply,” she said.
She emphasized that tackling environmental pollution starts within our own homes, calling on Nigerians to adopt more responsible habits with their resource use.
“Keeping our environment clean begins with reducing the waste we generate,” she stated.
She encouraged households, businesses, and communities to be more mindful in their food purchasing, preparation, consumption, and preservation, emphasizing that responsible consumption is a shared civic duty.
“I encourage households, businesses, and communities to reduce food waste, dispose of refuse properly, and adopt more sustainable practices that protect our environment,” she added.
She also emphasized that cutting down waste is crucial for creating cleaner, healthier communities, highlighting the importance of embracing environmental responsibility for the well-being of both current and future generations.
“Through our collective efforts, we can build cleaner, healthier communities for present and future generations,” the First Lady said.
