Leadership of Sharia Police in Kano state has denied the accusations of unlawful arrests.

The Director General of the agency, Abba Saidu Sufi said they do not make arrests except complaints are brought to them by residents of the state after which investigations are carried out then culprits are apprehended.

He said the Sharia Police also known as Hisbah was set up in 2004 to assist in maintaining sharia law where they are not being practiced in the state.

Sufi added that there was no need for visitors and non Muslims to be afraid of the sharia police because their work helps in obeying the teachings of the Holy Quran, adding that Hisbah or sharia police is open to receiving reports and complaints from all residents of the state irrespective of their ethnicity or Religion.

Several residents  fear the sharia police due to their call for the strict adherence to the sharia law.
