Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has awarded ₦50m in education support to a student, Ogheneovo Davina, after she delivered a speech at the inauguration of a model technical college in Oghareki, Ethiope West Local Government Area (LGA).

Davina, a Junior Technical II student, spoke on behalf of her fellow students during Friday’s commissioning of the Model Technical College, expressing appreciation for the state government’s investment in technical education.

She pledged that the students would make good use of the facilities to acquire practical skills and become self-reliant after graduation.

The student also said she would have voted for Oborevwori in the 2027 general elections if she were 18 years old.

The governor’s reward came as he reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving education infrastructure and expanding access to technical training across the state.

Oborevwori directed the Ministries of Primary and Secondary Education to assess public schools in poor condition and identify those requiring urgent rehabilitation.

He said the government had already instructed the ministries to identify schools in need of immediate intervention, noting that addressing the challenges would require sustained investment and planning.

Delta State has more than 1,400 public primary schools and 480 secondary schools, according to the governor.

Oborevwori described the new technical college as part of efforts to equip young people in Ethiope West and neighbouring communities with practical skills to improve their employment opportunities and economic independence.

The institution has workshops, staff and student accommodation, and sports facilities. The governor urged the management, staff and students to maintain the infrastructure for future generations.

He also announced plans to complete and inaugurate three other model technical colleges in Irri, Isoko South; Kiagbodo, Burutu; and Akugbene, Bomadi, before December 2026.

Former Delta State Governor James Ibori commended Oborevwori for completing the Oghareki project, which was initiated under the administration of his successor, Ifeanyi Okowa.

Ibori also praised the governor’s development projects across the state, particularly in Urhobo land.

The event was attended by political leaders and community representatives, including Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, member representing Ethiope Federal Constituency, and Christian Onogba, chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Council.

The Oghara monarch, HRM Noble Etsemitan Uku Oghara Na Me, also congratulated the governor on the completion of the college.
