A mechanic identified simply as Samson has been killed after he was allegedly lured to Abijo, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, under the pretext of repairing a Mercedes-Benz car.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 15, according to a police source.
Samson, who operated a mechanic workshop around the Warike Estate area of the community, was reportedly contacted to repair the vehicle and proceeded to the location where it was said to be parked.
He was allegedly taken into a bush after arriving at the location and hacked to death.
“The victim was lured to the location on the pretext of going to repair a Mercedes-Benz car. We were told that when he got there, he was taken into the bush and killed.
“Investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible,” the police source said.
The source added that suspected cultists were believed to be behind the killing.
An anti-cultism advocacy platform, in a post seen by PUNCH Metro, alleged that the killing was carried out as retaliation for the death of an Eiye member, Ola Sheu.
The platform claimed Sheu was killed by members of the NBM cult group on September 9 around Adeba Bus Stop in the Lakowe area of Ibeju-Lekki.
It alleged that Samson was identified as an Eiye member after a photograph of him wearing an Aye cult beret during his graduation was posted online to celebrate his birthday.
The platform claimed the photograph exposed his alleged affiliation to rival cultists, who subsequently targeted him in retaliation.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident but said the victim’s family initially reported him missing.
“Following the receipt of the information, detectives reportedly swung into action and visited the victim’s apartment,” she said.
She added that efforts were ongoing to track Samson’s mobile phone and establish his whereabouts, while the case remained under investigation.
