A 44-year-old man, Mr Solomon Adegboye, was on Thursday arraigned before an Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Isabo for allegedly stabbing a staff member of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.

The defendant, with no fixed address, is facing a two-count charge of assault and conduct likely to cause breach of public peace to which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, ASP Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offences on Oct. 11 at about 5 p.m. at the hospital’s Blood Laboratory Unit.

Olu-Balogun said the complainant, Toheeb Lawal, is a Medical Laboratory Scientist at FMC Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.

He alleged that the defendant unlawfully assaulted the complainant by stabbing him on his head and conducting himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of public peace.

According to him, the defendant is a relative of a deceased patient, who visited the laboratory to obtain clearance for the payment of bills and verification.

“An argument ensued when Lawal, who was on his duty post, attempted to attend to the defendant.

“The defendant allegedly punched the complainant and stabbed him in the head with a car key, which caused injury to his head,” he said.

He further alleged that the defendant fled the scene when he noticed that the complainant was bleeding.

He said police later arrested Adegboye at Kemta Police Station, where the incident had earlier been reported.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 353 and 249(d) of the Criminal Code Law of Ogun 2006.

The Magistrate, Mrs A.K. Araba, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.

She held that the surety must be a registered bondman with the Ogun State Judiciary and adjourned the case until Nov. 26 for hearing.
