The Kano State Police Command has paid N7.57m in life insurance benefits to the families of 17 officers who died in the line of duty.
The cheques, totalling N7,573,231.83, were presented by the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, at the command headquarters in Bompai, Kano, on Monday.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, disclosed this in a statement, describing the payment as part of the Nigeria Police Force’s Group Life Assurance Scheme.
The statement said the payment was among welfare benefits provided under the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu’s, welfare package for families of officers who died while performing their duties.
Presenting the cheques on behalf of the IGP, Bakori said the initiative was intended to ensure that the sacrifices of the deceased officers were not forgotten.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to the welfare of serving personnel and the families of deceased officers, promising that the police would continue to work towards prompt payment of entitlements due to families of fallen and injured personnel.
Bakori urged the beneficiaries to use the money judiciously and maintain relationships with the friends of their deceased relatives. He also assured them that his office remained open to provide assistance where necessary.
The commissioner added that the command was planning additional welfare packages for families of fallen officers.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, retired Assistant Superintendent of Police Ado Sule, who received a cheque on behalf of his deceased wife, thanked the IGP and the commissioner for the support.
Police management officials, senior officers and relatives of the deceased attended the presentation.
