Hungary has pledged to deepen bilateral relations with Nigeria in education, community development, humanitarian projects and other areas of mutual interest.
The Hungarian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Lóránd Endreffy, pledged his country’s commitment at a ceremony in Abuja on Friday, organised to mark the 70th anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 Revolution.
In his speech, Endreffy recounted the events of the 1956 Revolution and Hungary’s struggle for freedom from communist dictatorship and Soviet occupation.
He said that on Oct. 23, 1956, a student demonstration in Budapest quickly developed into a national uprising.
“People demanded freedom of expression, freedom of free elections and the withdrawal of Soviet troops.
“Most importantly, they wanted to decide how they would live and who would govern them,” he said.
The ambassador expressed appreciation to countries around the world that supported Hungary during its struggle for freedom.
He stated that ” their generosity has a lasting place in our national memory and reminds us that freedom brings responsibility to stand with others, especially those who face oppression and needs protection “.
Endreffy also reaffirmed Hungary’s commitment to being a reliable and constructive partner within the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), particularly in promoting common security, lasting partnerships and cooperation.
He described Nigeria as an important partner to Hungary, noting that the bilateral relationship was strengthened by collaboration among universities, businesses and local communities.
According to him, the Stipendium Hungarian scholarship programme has continued to provide Nigerian students with opportunities to study in Hungary, with more than 100 scholarships offered annually.
He added that more than 2,500 Nigerian students were currently studying in Hungary.
The ambassador also highlighted Hungary’s humanitarian and development initiatives, which involve collaboration with local communities.
He said Hungary’s support had contributed to projects in education, healthcare, water infrastructure and agricultural projects.
Endreffy thanked Nigerian partners for their commitment and contributions to the success of the initiatives.
He said there were further opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation in agriculture, water management, medical technology, defence and other areas of mutual interest.
The ambassador urged religious leaders, representatives of the Nigerian Government and members of the diplomatic corps to reflect on a photo exhibition featuring men and women honoured today for their roles in Hungary’s struggle for freedom and peace.
