The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed more than 100 sacks of empty alcoholic beverage bottles uncovered in a residential building in Lagos over suspected links to counterfeit drink production.

The agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate discovered the bottles at 322B Meiran Road, Agbado Oke-Odo, following intelligence about activities at the location.

Speaking in a video released by NAFDAC on Friday, an assistant director in the directorate, Kunle Ojo, said the building was in a secluded residential area where different materials were stored.

He said operatives found bottles of various sizes and brands covered with tarpaulins, including those bearing labels associated with Action Bitter and Royal Circle Premium Whiskey.

According to Ojo, the bottles were suspected to have been stockpiled for supply to people involved in producing counterfeit alcoholic drinks.
He said the agency destroyed the bottles to prevent them from being reused in the production of fake beverages.

Ojo condemned the use of a residential building for the activity, saying NAFDAC was committed to protecting public health.

“This is a residential area, and this is not acceptable to government. We are here to safeguard the health of the nation,” he said.

He urged residents to report suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods to the nearest NAFDAC office to help curb the production and distribution of counterfeit products.
