Retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) have given the Federal Government, the National Pension Commission (PenCom) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) until October 15 to fulfil agreements on gratuity payments and pension increases or face a mass protest in Abuja.
The retirees said they would stage a peaceful demonstration on November 2, 2026, if the authorities failed to meet their demands, including their exit from what they described as an “obnoxious pension scheme”.
The ultimatum was contained in a statement signed by the National Coordinator and Chairman of the Kaduna State chapter of the association, Retired Captain Mannir M. Lawal, and distributed to journalists in Kaduna.
The association expressed disappointment over the failure of the authorities to implement commitments reportedly made during negotiations with representatives of the retired officers.
According to the statement, the retirees had been assured that the agreed measures would be implemented by the end of September 2026.
The statement said the Director-General of PENCOM had promised the payment of gratuity equivalent to 300 per cent of annual emoluments and an increase in monthly pensions to 100 per cent of the applicable salary benchmark.
However, the officers said the failure to implement the commitments had weakened their confidence in the negotiation process and heightened concerns about their welfare.
The retirees maintained that they had devoted their productive years to protecting lives and property, maintaining law and order and safeguarding national security, insisting that their willingness to engage in dialogue should not be mistaken for weakness.
They called on the Federal Government, PENCOM and the IGP to take concrete and verifiable steps to honour the agreements and provide a clear implementation plan before the deadline.
The association described the planned demonstration as a last resort after exhausting available avenues of dialogue, stressing that the protest would be peaceful, lawful and orderly.
It also urged affected retirees across the country to remain united and prepare to participate in the demonstration if the authorities failed to meet the October 15 deadline.
The planned action would mark another escalation in the retirees’ campaign for improved pension benefits and a review of their participation in the contributory pension scheme.
