The Emir of Daura, Umar Faruq, has urged Northerners to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, citing the completion of major infrastructure projects initiated by his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.
The traditional ruler gave the endorsement on Tuesday during the inauguration of the third section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Federal Highway, a major transport corridor linking the Federal Capital Territory with northern Nigeria.
Faruq praised Tinubu for continuing projects started under Buhari, saying the decision demonstrated a commitment to national development beyond ethnic and regional considerations.
He argued that the administration’s infrastructure investments showed its determination to improve connectivity and economic activities in the North, urging residents to disregard criticism of the President.
The emir cited several road and railway projects, including the Kano-Abuja railway and roads linking Daura, Kwangwalam, Niger Republic, Katsina and Maiduguri, as examples of infrastructure development he said would benefit the region.
“Today, the roads in my domain, Daura-Kwangwalam to Niger, and so many other roads of Kano, Katsina, Kano-Maiduguri and so many others are to be completed soon,” he said.
Faruq added that projects spanning successive administrations were now approaching completion under Tinubu, describing the development as evidence of the President’s commitment to the North.
He also pledged to communicate his position to his people at the appropriate time, assuring Tinubu of their support.
“I will, at the appropriate time, tell my people what to do, and I am promising the President that certainly we will not betray his trust,” the emir said.
The highway project, valued at N252.89bn, is among the Federal Government’s major road investments in the North. The latest completed section includes 17.32 kilometres of asphalt pavement along the Zaria-Kano corridor, comprising 4.73 kilometres at Kunkumi and 12.57 kilometres from Karfi to AY Maikifi filling station.
The project had experienced delays following the termination of an earlier contract, largely attributed to rising construction costs. Outstanding sections included about 118 kilometres of dual carriageway between Abuja and Kaduna, alongside the 17.32-kilometre stretch between Zaria and Kano.
Faruq maintained that the projects provided sufficient reason for Northerners to consider supporting Tinubu for another term.
